The best government economic plan is not to hinder those who produce, save, invest, employ, work and consume.” Irineu Evangelista de Sousa (1813-1889), Baron and Viscount of Mauá.

History and Objectives

NEVM - Núcleo de Estudos Visconde de Mauá is the Young Entrepreneurs Academy created by Instituto Liberdade in 2003; it comprises university students gathered together to study about Entrepreneurship in depth. NEVM believes that Leadership is responsive to learning and to improvement, and that moral foundations are essential for Leadership. The name "Viscount Mauá", was chosen as a tribute by NEVM to Mr. Irineu Evangelista de Souza (1813-1889), who was the first real Brazilian entrepreneur in 1839, a time when the main economy in the country was rural and based on slavery. He was an industrial, a banker, an agrarian entrepreneur, a politician and diplomat, who constructed the first railway in the Brazil that connected Rio de Janeiro with Petropolis.

Projects Since Instituto Liberdade is a Brazilian think thank, located at the TECNOPUC – the Science and Technology Park inside the campus at the Pontifice Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), it is natural for NEVM to be part of the entrepreneurial community with linkages into the university departments, companies and research institutes. The Cycle of Studies and Experiences on Leadership is an educational program converging lectures and practical activities, addressing essential subjects that a leader must understand. The course demonstrates and proves the advantages of a free society, based on the principles of free initiative, of free market economy, of Rule of Law and of moral values of the individuals. It promotes events allowing young undergrad students to gain knowledge about  philosophy, economy, law, politics and entrepreneurship ideas, receiving the necessary information to study the Brazilian society and history, to analyze Brazilian public policies and to receive tools to become a leader in the development process. This course is innovative and unique because it creates an environment where knowledge is not compartmentalized. The Knowledge Cluster is another project that aggregates students to debate ideas about Classical Liberalism, Austrian School of Economics and to learn concepts about economic freedom, political and social thinking from the Age of Enlightenment, and to promote lectures about Brazilian thinking.
